Secrets of Grindea: How To Rebind Controller Keys

Unlock the secrets of Grindea by discovering how to customize key bindings for controllers. This concise guide aims to empower you to reconfigure buttons on any controller, utilizing Steam’s integrated controller reconfigurator.

How to rebind keys for controllers in Secrets of Grindea

Learn how to rebind keys for virtually any controller with this brief guide. Discover the steps to open and customize key bindings for games in your Steam library.

Step 1:

Navigate to your Steam library and right-click on the specific game for which you wish to modify your controller controls.

Step 2:

A small menu will appear, featuring options such as Play, Add to favorites, Add to, Remove from, Manage, and Properties. Left-click on “Properties.”

Step 3:

A new mini-screen will appear with a menu presenting five options on the left side: General, Updates, Installed files, Betas, and Controller. Left-click on “Controller.”

Step 4:

In the controller menu, you’ll find information stating, “Steam Input allows any controller to be used with any Steam game and enables controller reconfiguration. Use the controller configurator to see more details or remap your controller.”

Beneath this, you should see the text “Override for (insert the name of the game you’ve chosen here),” along with a drop-down menu that defaults to “Disable Steam Input.” Click on the drop-down menu (the text with the arrow next to it) to open it, and choose the option “Enable Steam Input.”

Step 5:

Take note of the underlined “Controller Configurator” in the text above “Override for (insert the name of your chosen game).” Click on “Controller Configurator” to open the Steam controller key rebinding program. Simply left-click on it to proceed.

Step 6:

A new screen will appear. At the very top of this screen, you’ll find the name of your game followed by the words “Controller Layout.” Additionally, you’ll see three pictures of controllers (you may see more than three, but in my case, I use a Logitech F310 controller, which is recognized as an Xbox controller by Steam, so I only see three controller images). One of these is an Xbox controller, while the other two represent PlayStation controllers (possibly a PS4 and a PS5, although I cannot confirm, as I haven’t owned a console in over 23 years).

Underneath the controller image labeled “Your controller,” you should observe a green check mark. This indicates that the game and Steam recognize this particular controller as the one you are using for the specified game.

Step 7:

Optionally, you can click on “View Layout” to understand the function of each button. By default, you will see labels like “Left Bumper LB,” “Standard analog Trigger LT,” “Select” (displaying the symbol your controller uses for “Select”), “RB Right Bumper,” and so forth. The reason for presenting both the full name and the short form of each button side by side is to indicate the button’s current function and its binding.

As an example using an Xbox controller for this text, if you decide to modify your right bumper button (RB) to function as your A button instead, the controller layout screen will show “RB A Button.” However, it’s crucial to note that after making such a change, you must manually update your A button to register as your new right bumper button. This ensures it appears as “A Right Bumper” on the controller layout screen (the A, B, X, Y button layouts are usually in the bottom right corner of the controller layout screen).

Step 8:

After reviewing your current controller layout, press the “Esc” key on your keyboard to return to the previous screen. Always use the “Esc” button to navigate back within this program. It automatically saves any modifications you make, eliminating the need for manual saving.

Step 9:

Click on “Edit Layout.”

Step 10:

On the “Edit Layout” screen, you’ll find four options on the left side: Buttons, Dpad, Triggers, and Joysticks. The default selection is usually set to “Buttons.”

Step 11:

To assign a new function to the desired button, left-click on the box located to the right of the button in question. For instance, if you’re using an Xbox controller layout, you’ll see a green A button on the left side of your current screen. To its right, there will be a box labeled “A Button.” This pattern holds for other keys as well, such as a red B button with “B Button” to its right, and so on.

Step 12:

This action will open another new screen featuring an image of your controller in the center. At the top of the screen, you should see options such as GAMEPAD, MOUSE, KEYBOARD, NUMPAD, ACTION SETS, and SYSTEM. Currently, it is selected on GAMEPAD since you should be viewing a gamepad in the middle of the screen. (If a picture of a gamepad is not visible, left-click on GAMEPAD at the top of the screen to return to it.)

Here, left-click on the new button you want the designated button to represent. For example, if you wish to change your A button to function in the game as your Right Bumper button, left-click on Right Bumper.

Upon doing this, you will be redirected to the previous screen, and in the box to the right of the green A button, it should now display “Right Bumper.” Congratulations! You have successfully rebound your first button using the Steam controller rebind. Ensure to repeat Steps 11 and 12 for the RB button so that the RB button now registers as the A Button.

FINAL WORDS:

I also took a quick look at the Dpad, Triggers, and Joystick menu sections. Clicking on them reveals the keybindings, and clicking on the respective boxes brings up the same menu as for the buttons. It seems you can follow steps 11 and 12 for each of these elements.

Regarding the keyboard, I suggest utilizing the in-game key rebinds for simplicity. I successfully reconfigured keyboard controls to a generic MMORPG setup in about 45 seconds. It’s very user-friendly. Also, I acknowledge that the image for the guide may not be ideal in terms of size and quality. I opted for a quick copy/paste of the Secrets of Grindea game picture from Google and resized it to fit within the parameters. I didn’t want to invest a lot of time in something relatively minor.

I hope this guide proves helpful to people. Remember, a non-frustrated gamer is a happy gamer, and we all want to enjoy this game we’ve been eagerly waiting for (in my case, it’s been a wait of around 5 years and 4 months). Happy gaming, everyone!
