Top 15 Beginners Tips For SunnySide
Yesterday, the Japanese farming and life simulation game Sunnyside was released! If you’re planning to start playing this week, I’ve compiled some beginner tips and tricks based on my initial experience with the game to assist you in getting started.
#1 – Getting Around
Navigating the expansive map can feel overwhelming initially, especially when you’re trekking between locations to fulfill quests.
The good news is that you’ll receive a bicycle early in the game—I got mine by Day 6—and it makes a significant difference. Hang in there until you unlock it!
#2 – Return to Last Sleep Point Button
Speaking of the vast map, here’s my second tip: utilize the “Return to last sleep point” button!
This feature is incredibly handy, particularly after traversing across town. Instead of retracing your steps, simply open the menu and select this button to teleport back to your homestead.
Plus, you don’t need to fret about your bicycle either! Once you teleport home, you can easily summon your bike back using the vehicle app on your phone.
#3 – Sunnyseed App
Speaking of phone apps, one of the fantastic apps you’ll unlock is called Sunnyseed, where you can order all your seeds.
Gone are the days of waiting for stores to open—you can now order seeds directly from your phone anytime, anywhere. Just be prepared for potentially steep expedited shipping fees.
It’s crucial to check Sunnyseed daily because their seed inventory changes, and they often have special offers.
One important aspect to note about Sunnyseed is that you’re not purchasing individual seeds like in other farming sims—you’re buying seed multipacks. So, it’s wise to save your money and buy only one of each type.
However, the number of seeds in each pack is randomized, with the range displayed on the store page. This adds a bit of excitement but can make garden planning a bit challenging.
#4 – Planting Strategy
When you start planting your seeds, aim to plant them near your shed. In Sunnyside, unlike other farming games, there isn’t a watering can available.
Instead, you’ll use a hose connected to the side of your shed to water your crops! Be mindful, though, as there’s a limited amount of water available initially.
#5 – Plot Size
One of the unique features in Sunnyside is the ability to adjust the size of your planting plots to accommodate different types of plants. This change from typical farming sims adds a refreshing twist to the gameplay.
However, increasing plot size doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll get more produce from your seeds! Unless you’re aiming for aesthetics or specific gameplay strategies, there’s no need to construct larger plots for smaller seeds.
#6 – Using Raised Beds for Planting
Speaking of enhancing your farm’s aesthetics, if there are plants you want but you’re uncertain about their final placement, consider using raised beds. This allows you to position them temporarily and rearrange them later as needed!
#7 – Protecting Against Wild Animals
Another aspect to watch out for in maintaining your plants are wild animals like raccoons, which may sneak into your farm to pilfer your crops when you’re not around. But fret not!
Early in the game, you’ll unlock fences that effectively deter wild animals and safeguard your crops. Initially, I didn’t realize you could build fences using your drone instead of needing to craft them at a workbench. This feature not only simplifies protection but also offers a strategic view for planning your farm layout from above.
Alternatively, as you progress, you’ll have the option to purchase a pet from the city store, with dogs being particularly effective at warding off wild animals.
#8 – Managing Building Materials
Similar to other farming sims, Sunnyside involves constructing various structures such as coops or, in this case, a tea house throughout the game.
When you’re working on larger projects that require multiple resources, it can be challenging to keep track of everything you need.
But fear not! With the blueprints app on your phone, you can conveniently check the required quantities of each resource on the fly. You can even pin this information to your screen for easy reference whenever needed.
#9 – Trees on Your Farm
When gathering resources for constructing buildings, it’s essential to note that trees on your farm won’t regenerate once cut down, and there’s no way to replant them.
However, there are numerous spots around town where you can gather wood, and these resources do replenish over time. While you can’t plant standard trees on your farm, you can cultivate fruit and nut trees instead.
#10 – Managing Energy
One thing I noticed is that my energy depletes quite rapidly, and contrary to expectations, eating food doesn’t replenish it.
Instead, energy regenerates gradually over time. However, you can speed up this process by sitting down, which you can do by opening your tool wheel and selecting the sit button located at the bottom left.
#11 – Food and Energy
Eating food does contribute to speeding up your energy regeneration. However, unless you’re engaged in strenuous farm work, it’s not necessary to eat food regularly. The hunger bar may deplete, but it won’t have any negative impact other than slowing down your energy regeneration.
The simplest food items to gather are berries and mushrooms, which can be found on bushes or tree stumps scattered around town.
#12 – Customize Your Day Length
Ever feel like there’s never enough time in the day when playing a game? In Sunnyside, you have the power to change that!
Simply open your settings menu and adjust the day length using the slider to customize your play session according to your preferences.
#13 – Taking Screenshots
If you’re aiming to capture stunning photos or find the UI distracting, you can press L3 to hide it in Sunnyside. I personally enjoy doing this while exploring town to fully appreciate the game’s beautiful scenery.
For those seeking picturesque screenshots, you can use your drone to capture them from better angles, enhancing your photographic compositions.
#14 – Store Opening Hours
When using the map in Sunnyside, clicking on a location allows you to view their opening and closing times, which is incredibly useful for planning your day efficiently.
Additionally, there seems to be a quirk (possibly a bug) where you can still shop at stores even after their stated opening hours have passed. I’ve experienced this myself a couple of times, so it’s worth checking out if you’re like me and tend to arrive late.
#15 – Daily Omikuji and Shrine Abilities
As you progress further in the game, especially after exploring the mines, remember to purchase your daily Omikuji!
Located on the left-hand side of the Konami Shrine, each Omikuji costs 10 Cupules and grants a random blessing to aid your gameplay.
Additionally, don’t overlook unlocking new abilities at the Kashiwa tree within the shrine. As you enhance your skills through gameplay, these abilities can significantly improve your experience. For instance, one ability may extend the duration before you feel hungry, enhancing your overall gameplay strategy.
Conclusion
There’s a wealth of features and nuances in Sunnyside that make it an exciting and immersive experience. These tips represent valuable insights that would have greatly benefited me when starting out.
